Hi everyone!

My name is Julie. I am a Ph.D candidate in Comparative Literature at IU -- which means I get to read a lot of books, watch a lot of movies, and talk to a ton of amazing people!

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Paris where I got a Masters in English. I have always wanted to travel and got the opportunity to study and teach as an exchange student in London. After a year over there, I was not quite ready to go back home and came to Bloomington on a similar exchange program. I really liked the community I found here, the students I met in my classes, as well as the kind of intellectual conversations people were engaging in and I decided to stay for my Ph.D! I guess such travels made for an interesting accent...

I study arts and literature in a social and global contexts which means I believe the study of arts should never be separated from its social, political, and historical context. In high school I majored in Sociology and Economics with a concentration in Literature and Philosophy. I went to College to study Literature and Culture from English speaking countries. Later, during my Masters, I developed a strong interest for the study of film. Comparative Literature gave me the chance to combine all these interests in my research and to transmit my passion to my students. I have taught fun subjects such as Intro to Pop Culture, T.V and Literature, Horror Films, and Science Fiction.

I especially love contemporary films, texts, and visual art projects that explore questions of gender, race, and sexuality. I like to look at self narratives, which means I look at any kinds of production in which someone portrays their own lives -- selfies, social media, autobiography, experimental films etc.

IU also gave me the incredible opportunity to study the making of film. I have a passion for old and obsolete technology and I learned how to shoot using 16mm film and Super 8 -- Yes! Like in old movies! I think making film should be fun and accessible to everyone and I am also a strong proponent of DIY filmmaking. In other words, get any kind of recording device, put images together, and see what happens!

I believe that making arts, any kind of arts, helps understanding the cultural objects we consume every day and to make sense out of our surroundings. I am looking forward to meet you all, and to spend an amazing week with you, Breanya, and Hogan, thinking about the world we live in and creating our own representations!
